The Details

Though President Kennedy would not live to see this crowning achievement, NASA and the American people bore witness to the greatest achievement to date in human history in 1969. On July 20, 1969, mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin landed on the surface of the moon and would go on to spend 21.5 hours walking on the surface of the moon. On the obverse side of the 1 oz Apollo 11 Silver Round is the image of the Apollo 11 lunar lander, nicknamed Eagle. The Eagle landed on the moon on that fateful day with Armstrong and Aldrin aboard as Michael Collins remained in orbit aboard the command module Columbia all by himself. While Armstrong and Aldrin walked the surface of the moon they collected a total of 47.5 pounds of lunar material to bring back to Earth with them. The reverse face of the Apollo 11 Silver Round depicts a different type of Eagle landing on the surface of the moon. This design element features an American bald eagle with its majestic wings spread wide as it touches down on the surface of the moon with its talons. The outline of Earth is visible in the background.
